The Targaryen dynasty is at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins when King Viserys breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm.

Season 1 recap

"House of the Dragon" Season 1 Recap: Everything You Need to Know

The death of King Viserys I Targaryen shatters decades of peaceful rule and triggers an inevitable civil war. The question of succession divides House Targaryen into two warring factions: the "Blacks," who support the King's firstborn daughter, Rhaenyra, and the "Greens," who champion the coronation of Aegon II, his eldest son from his second marriage. While Viserys slowly rots alive from a mysterious illness, desperately trying to maintain the illusion of family unity, his inner circle prepares for a vicious power struggle. The presence of combat-ready dragons on both sides elevates a local dynastic crisis into a threat of total annihilation for all of Westeros.

01

The Question of Succession

Following the tragic deaths of his wife and newborn son, King Viserys names Rhaenyra his official heir, cutting off the claims of his impulsive brother, Daemon. However, the King soon takes a second wife: the young Alicent Hightower, daughter of his Hand. Alicent gives birth to sons Aegon and Aemond, creating alternative male-line claimants to the Iron Throne. To unite the two most powerful Valyrian houses, Rhaenyra enters a political marriage with Laenor Velaryon, but she gives birth to three dark-haired boys fathered by Ser Harwin Strong. The court becomes hopelessly polarized, and the legitimacy of Rhaenyra's children becomes the opposition's primary political weapon.

02

Blood, Fire, and Intrigue in the Shadows of the Throne

While Rhaenyra tries to consolidate her position, Daemon and Corlys Velaryon wage a grueling war in the Stepstones, proving their military might and securing vital trade routes. In the capital, tension boils over into open hostility. Ser Criston Cole, spurned by Rhaenyra, switches his allegiance to Alicent and beats Laenor’s lover to death right at the royal wedding feast. To clear the path to power for the Green faction, the Master of Whisperers, Larys Strong, orchestrates a fire at Harrenhal, burning his own father and brother, Harwin, alive. Realizing her vulnerability, Rhaenyra fakes Laenor's death, allowing him to flee to Essos, and marries Daemon Targaryen.

03

The Rift at Driftmark and the Last Supper

The conflict between the children of the two factions erupts into physical violence during the funeral of Laena Velaryon on Driftmark. Young Aemond secretly claims the oldest and largest living dragon, Vhagar, and in the ensuing brawl, Rhaenyra's son Lucerys slashes out his eye. Alicent demands Luke's eye in retribution, but Viserys forbids further escalation.

Years later, the gravely ill King gathers his entire family for a feast, begging them to make peace. For one evening, the feud subsides. That night, a delirious Viserys mutters to Alicent about Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy. She mistakenly believes the King's dying wish is to place their son Aegon on the throne.

04

Usurpation and First Blood

Immediately after Viserys's death, Hand of the King Otto Hightower and the Green Council isolate Rhaenyra's supporters, execute dissenting lords, and hastily crown Aegon II in the Dragonpit. Upon learning of the usurpation, a pregnant Rhaenyra suffers a miscarriage. On Dragonstone, the Black Council holds an alternative coronation for her. Desperate to avoid a full-scale war, Rhaenyra sends her sons as envoys to the Great Houses. Lucerys arrives at Storm's End, only to find Aemond there, having already secured an alliance with the Baratheons. In the stormy skies above the castle, Aemond chases Lucerys on Vhagar to intimidate him. The dragons disobey their riders: Vhagar devours Lucerys and his dragon Arrax in a single bite, permanently shutting the door on any diplomatic resolution.

What to remember

What to Remember Before Season 2

  • Season 1 features the definitive deaths of King Viserys I, Lucerys Velaryon, Lord Lyonel and Ser Harwin Strong, as well as Vaemond Velaryon, whom Daemon beheads for publicly insulting Rhaenyra.
  • The pivotal secret is the prophecy of "The Song of Ice and Fire"—Aegon the Conqueror's dream about the coming of the White Walkers. Viserys passes this down to Rhaenyra as the burden of the sovereign, but his deathbed delirium leads to a fatal misunderstanding by Alicent.
  • In the finale, peace talks are completely derailed. Daemon informs Rhaenyra of Luke's death, causing a dark shift in her gaze as the Black faction prepares to answer with fire and blood.
