"Paradise" Season 1 Recap: Everything You Need to Know

Suspicion immediately falls on Xavier due to a clear personal motive: he openly blamed Cal for the presumed death of his wife, Teri, who missed the evacuation flight. Atlanta, where Teri was stranded, was a primary target for a nuclear strike following an Antarctic supervolcano eruption that triggered a global war over the planet's remaining resources.

Suspended from duty, Collins refuses to be the scapegoat and launches an off-the-books investigation. He initially targets Agent Nicole Robinson, Cal's known lover, and the bunker's creator, Samantha "Sinatra" Redmond, who was seen fiercely arguing with the president shortly before his death. The case gains traction when psychotherapist Gabriela Torabi delivers a posthumous warning from Cal: Xavier's partner and best friend, Billy Pace, is not who he claims to be and poses a lethal threat.

Flashbacks reveal Billy's dark history as Sinatra’s covert cleaner, previously tasked with executing a reconnaissance team that discovered the surface was still habitable. Realizing Sinatra now views Xavier as a liability, Billy demands she leave his friend and his children alone. In response, the billionaire activates her second sleeper agent — Billy’s own girlfriend, Jane Driscoll — who unhesitatingly poisons her lover. Shortly before his murder, Billy manages to meet with Collins, confessing that Sinatra is a cold-blooded killer and he was merely her attack dog.

Billy's death pushes Xavier and Nicole to drop their mutual distrust and unite against Sinatra. While Xavier secures his children and convinces a climate-control technician to project a whistleblower message across the artificial sky, Nicole rallies loyalists to raid a secret government armory. To erase the damning projection, Sinatra reboots the power grid, plunging the facility into darkness and panic.

Gabriela brokers a standoff between Xavier and Sinatra. Staring down the barrel of Xavier's gun, the billionaire plays her trump cards: she is holding Xavier's daughter, Presley, hostage, but his wife, Teri, is actually alive. Sinatra explains that on Doomsday, Cal prevented a nuclear holocaust by initiating a global EMP ("Blue Code") that neutralized all incoming warheads. She offers a deal: Presley's safety and Teri's coordinates in exchange for quelling the mutiny and finding the president's actual killer, whose DNA doesn't match the system's registry.

Xavier, Nicole, and Gabriela eventually track down the culprit: a former construction foreman named Trent, who had stolen the identity of the town librarian, Eli Davis. Twelve years prior, Trent was fired for trying to expose a deadly arsenopyrite toxin killing his crew. He attempted to assassinate Cal then — a bullet Xavier took for the president. By murdering the real Davis and altering his own appearance to infiltrate the bunker and finish the job, Trent eventually settled into a quiet underground life until a chance encounter with Cal reopened old wounds. He infiltrated the presidential suite and bludgeoned Cal to death with a massive industrial drill head. Cornered by Xavier and Nicole, Trent commits suicide by throwing himself off the dome's technical tier.

Armed with the truth, Xavier returns to Sinatra to retrieve his daughter and the promised coordinates. Intentionally misled by her rogue operative, Sinatra assumes Jane defied her orders and executed the girl. The news of his daughter's supposed death sends Collins into a blind rage; he slaughters the security detail and holds Sinatra at gunpoint. Before he can pull the trigger, Jane bursts into the room, shoots Sinatra in the chest, and reveals that Presley is safe and sound.

The season concludes with Xavier leaving his children in Nicole's custody. He breaches the aviation hangar, hijacks a plane, and abandons the bunker, setting a course for Atlanta. Meanwhile, a critically wounded Sinatra is left incapacitated in a hospital bed, temporarily losing her grip on the facility, while Jane successfully keeps her true, lethal nature hidden from everyone else.
